Phung, whose full name is Dao Ngoc Phung, is from an impoverished and landless family, and, five years ago, her mother was diagnosed with cancer. After she died, leaving the family with large medical debts, the father moved to Ho Chi Minh City. He returned only on weekends.
School was possible because Room to Read paid for school fees, books, uniform, school bag and bicycle, while also providing a broad range of counseling and training.
